Something More2026

My latest single, Something More, is now out in the wild! The fourth release since Letting Go, it takes a heavier turn—vibing with Wasteland or Deadweight from my previous work. Folx who have heard it often comment that it calls to mind the band, A Perfect Circle, and as they’re one of my fave bands, I’ll take that as a tremendous compliment! The riffs might hit harder, but they don’t bury the hook. Even if you usually steer clear of the heavy end of the spectrum, you might still enjoy this one!

About the song

I’m a bit nervous about writing this one up, as my partner hears and interprets this song to mean something very different than where it came from, for me. This ability to derive your own meaning from a piece is something I really admire and love about great art, so I’m loathed to spoil that potential by telling my version of it!

So please don’t read on if it’s already calling something to mind for you!

I wrote this song about four years ago (circa 2022) during a very difficult time in my ‘day-job.’ That experience sparked a lot of inner turmoil and soul-searching, as I was trying to find my personal strength to stand tall in the midst of a really shitty situation, where I felt my reputation was being dragged through the mud due to someone else’s actions, and feeling powerless to effect change in the situation. And also felt really let down by the lack of support from the people that could—folx I respected and admired.

I have a set of affirmations that comes up on my phone, and one of them is “You don’t always have to tell your side of the story. Time will.” The quote is widely attributed to TobyMac—though I can’t entirely recall where I first saw it. This advice helped me a lot to make it through that period. As did writing this song—in the long tradition of art as therapy!

At a recent solo show when I performed this song, I mentioned that it was about an ex-coworker, and had multiple people comment that they never wanted to cross me at work!! I tell you, though: better to have that energy channeled into music, than letting it seep out into real life...

Hopefully the song can help someone else through a rough day/week/year of their own.

I'm proud of the production on this track. I think it’s is the closest I’ve come to capturing the raw energy of my live vocal performances in a recording. A dear friend of mine texted me after hearing an early mix to say: “That’s one big mofo of a track… Fuck this is a monster! Really want to unpack how you did this one.” Reading that definitely made my day...

Lyrics

Do you say what you’re believing?
Are these delusions truth in your small, distorted world?
Obfuscate the meaning to mislead me
Is there any substance in the words you use at all?

Feel the weight of my regret
The shadows of my mistakes an endless toll
Will I abide at my expense?
Til’ I’m a bloodied mess beside an empty road?

Is this the way?
A lie begets the truth that never gets told
And I don’t know why
I find myself
Playing along with all this bullshit and lies

All the things that might redeem this,
Are locked inside a vault, where I don’t know the code
Am I ever meant to win this?
Seems the odds are stacked against… the cards are poised to fall

Feed the shame to my regret
All the things I should’ve done rot in a hole
Make amends at my expense
Am I the fool to walk this road until I fall?

Is this the way?
A lie begets the truth that never gets told
And I don’t know why
I find myself
Playing along with all this bullshit and lies

I need to know
When everything’s done, and buried
Who’s left? And
What would it mean if I don’t keep conceding?
Show some self-belief in this moment,
Make myself whole…

My heart is numb
It’s done with all this heeding
Is it so wrong
To expect something more?
To expect something more…
